For the last two winters now, we were unfortunate enough to experience a winter storm power outage in our area. These seem to have become a more frequent occurrence. Some people say the power grid is becoming overloaded. I do not know much about the power grid, but I do know one thing. I am glad that I am prepared for the next winter power outage.
While some folks panic and try to make last minute preparations for times like these, my family can relax and not worry. This is because we are wood burning stove owners. I am always amazed by how many people call us the day before a predicted winter event asking if we could come out and install a wood stove that day. While I appreciate the opportunity, it unfortunately does not work that way. The time frame to prepare and have a wood stove installed is a few weeks minimum before a winter storm hits. Since lots of snow and ice is being predicted this year, that time is now.
Everyone knows the main function of a wood stove is to provide heat, and that is certainly what they do best. My wood stove produces enough heat to keep our entire home warm on even the coldest winter nights. However, it does much more than that!
Here are four things that you may not have realized that your wood stove can do in the event of a power outage:

1. Stove- A cast iron griddle or skillet will quickly heat up to 700 + degrees on a stove top. This enables you to cook anything you would cook on your gas or electric range.>

2. Oven- I keep a $30 collapsible Coleman camping oven behind my wood stove. When placed on the stove top, it maintains a pretty constant interior temperature of 350 degrees. This is fine for making muffins or biscuits if needed.

3. Water heater- We are on well water here, so if the temperature drops into the single digits or if the power goes out, we lose water. I always keep gallon water jugs for emergencies so that if we lose water, we can always warm some up for a hot shower, coffee, or whatever we need. A hot wood stove will bring a gallon of water to a boil in about 15 minutes.

4. Generator- This is the most surprising feature to most people. A small wood stove generator will produce enough electricity to light up a couple of 40 watt equivalent LED lights and charge a couple of cell phones too! A wood stove generator costs far less than a gas-powered generator and you don’t have to worry about a gas shortage.

So, if you are like so many folks who are thinking about getting a wood stove but keep putting it off, don’t wait until you desperately need one to get the ball rolling. Call us today and we will be glad to help!
